Marathon Relay - New for 2012
The Marathon Relay is new for 2012, having had a well received trial last year.
Details
Each team will consist of three runners. Teams can be male, female or mixed.
The team needs a name of your choice in addition to it allotted race I/D.
There are three sections covering the route:-
The first being from Worthing Rotary Playing Fields to St Botolph’s Church, BN44 3WA.
This leg is the shortest leg and is some 6.5 miles and takes the first of the forts,
Cissbury Ring. The leg finishes just short of the river crossing.
There are two drink stations on this leg.
The second is from St Botolph’s Church to Devil’s Dyke and return to St Boltophs.
The leg is 10 miles and climbs up to Devil’s Dyke and returns along the
same route. The leg goes over the river crossing twice. Including the drinks station
at the river crossing there are a total of five drinks stations.
The third is from St Botolph’s Church back to Worthing Rotary Fields. This leg is by far the hardest. The route goes up Annington Hill and passes Steyning Bowl before the long climb up to Chanctonbury Ring. The route then turns south and drops down to the back of North Farm. Finally it climbs back up over Cissbury Ring and has a long downhill finish. There are three drinks stations on this final leg but plenty of refreshments at the end. The length of this leg is 11 miles.
There is only one changeover point and this will be just after St Botolph’s Church on the path to the river crossing. This station will handle runners in both directions. It will be operational from 10.15am and close down at 1.30pm in accordance with the restrictions of the main marathon.
A timing chip will be passed from one runner to another. The chip will be attached as directed. (details are to be confirmed).
There will be no chip recorded times for individual legs, although each runner will be checked and manually timed at the change-over point.
There will be very limited car parking at the small car park adjacent to the church. Teams are restricted to one support vehicle only. Additional parking will be available in the adjoining field.
Each runner will have a team I/D that must be worn on the front and the back to show that the runner is in the Relay rather than the individual marathon race. The team I/D will include an identifier for leg that the runner is competing .
Directions to get to the changeover point.
Leave Hill barn Recreation Ground and go down to A27, head east on the A27 towards Brighton. Pass through all the major sets of traffic lights. At The Downlands, continue along dual carriage way, through traffic lights at Sompting, continue until the roundabout at Lancing Manor Leisure Centre and then keep on the A27 until the big set of traffic lights at Shoreham Airport. Take the left hand turn into Coombes Road, take care on the twisty lane, travel for some two miles pass Church Farm on the left, where the runners will be joining the road. The car park for relay support vehicles is the Burial Ground Car Park just before St Botolph’s Church.
The relay changeover point is some 300 hundred yards further along the road, where the South Downs Way goes down to the river.
To return to the Start/Finish, on leaving the car park turn left and go to the end of the lane to the junction of the A27. Turn right towards Portsmouth and return to Hill Barn Recreation Ground.
There will be no refreshments supplied at the changeover, so ensure the team has all it needs.
